ABOUT ULYSSES:

I installed my first Linux system, which was Slackware, in the summer of 1995. Then that fall I wiped root and installed the new version of Slackware. Then that winter I wiped root and installed Debian. I've stuck with Debian ever since.

Most of my programming is in Perl and PHP. I rarely do bash or sh scripting any more, unless it's a startup script or a really simple quick-and-dirty script. I've dabbled in other languages, such as Common Lisp and Erlang, but I always go back to either Perl or PHP when I want to set up something new. My database of choice is PostgreSQL, but at work I use mostly Oracle, with some Sybase and MySQL.

I was part of a team that administrated about 600 servers. Currently, due to consolidation, reorganization, and layoffs, I'm sole support for about 250 servers. I also do projects and write web tools for myself and others.

We're a 24/7 production shop, so I am pretty much permanently on-call. I've trained others to do some of the simpler troubleshooting, and where possible provide tools that fix immediate issues, such as, for example, pulling ailing servers out of rotation automatically. However, I still have to be available for more critical issues. Because we stream audio and video for customers around the world, it's important to have a fast response to any customer issue, no matter when it happens.

In my free time, I write, program, read, watch videos, game, cook, and roast coffee. My other webpages should give a good general idea about my interests.
